JICF Men's Fellowship Leader Roles & Responsibilities

"And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also."

— 2 Timothy 2:2

Our Calling

A Men's Fellowship Leader is more than a discussion facilitator.

He is a shepherd, disciple-maker, encourager, and role model who intentionally helps men become mature followers of Jesus Christ and equips them to disciple others.

Our desire is not merely to lead successful small groups, but to see transformed men who faithfully follow Christ and reproduce themselves in others.

Leader Commitments

1. Walk Closely with Christ

A leader's most important responsibility is his personal relationship with Jesus.

Every leader is expected to:

  • Maintain a consistent habit of Bible reading and prayer.
  • Pursue a life of obedience, humility, and integrity.
  • Continue growing spiritually through worship, fellowship, and service.
  • Depend on the Holy Spirit rather than personal ability.

A leader cannot lead others where he is unwilling to go himself.

2. Be a Christ-like Example

Leadership begins with example.

As Paul wrote:

"Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ." — 1 Corinthians 11:1

Leaders should strive to model:

  • Love
  • Humility
  • Servanthood
  • Faithfulness
  • Integrity
  • Teachability

Our lives often speak louder than our lessons.

3. Shepherd the Men Entrusted to You

Know your men personally.

Every leader should:

  • Learn each member's story.
  • Know their spiritual condition.
  • Pray regularly for each member.
  • Encourage those who are struggling.
  • Celebrate spiritual growth and answered prayers.

People grow best when they know they are loved.

4. Build Genuine Relationships

Spiritual transformation happens best in the context of authentic relationships.

Leaders should intentionally:

  • Meet individually with at least one member each week.
  • Encourage fellowship outside Saturday meetings.
  • Practice hospitality whenever possible.
  • Foster trust, openness, and mutual encouragement.

Our goal is not simply attendance, but genuine brotherhood.

5. Facilitate Life-Changing Discussions

The purpose of group discussion is transformation, not merely information.

Leaders should:

  • Prepare before each meeting.
  • Encourage everyone to participate.
  • Listen well.
  • Ask thoughtful questions.
  • Guide conversations back to Scripture.
  • Help members identify practical application.

Teach less. Engage more. Apply always.

6. Pray Faithfully

Prayer is one of the primary ways leaders care for their group.

Leaders are encouraged to:

  • Pray regularly for each member.
  • Pray with members whenever opportunities arise.
  • Invite the group to pray for one another.
  • Trust God to bring lasting transformation.

7. Model Disciple-Making

Every leader is expected to be personally making disciples.

This means intentionally investing in one or more men outside the weekly gathering by:

  • Encouraging spiritual growth.
  • Studying Scripture together.
  • Meeting regularly.
  • Helping them obey Christ.
  • Teaching them to disciple others.

We should never ask others to make disciples if we are not doing so ourselves.

8. Develop Future Leaders

Disciple-making includes raising the next generation of leaders.

Each leader should prayerfully identify one or two faithful men who show spiritual maturity and a willingness to serve.

Invest in them intentionally so they will eventually be able to shepherd others.

Healthy ministries reproduce healthy leaders.

9. Cultivate a Disciple-Making Culture

Our objective is not simply to maintain groups.

Our objective is multiplication.

Leaders should encourage every member to continue growing toward becoming someone who can eventually disciple another person.

Success is measured not only by attendance, but by transformed lives.

10. Foster Biblical Community

Leaders should intentionally cultivate the six Community Group Core Values:

  • Devote Daily
  • Pursue Relationally
  • Counsel Biblically
  • Live Authentically
  • Admonish Faithfully
  • Engage Missionally

These values help create an environment where spiritual growth can flourish.

11. Fulfill Ministry Responsibilities

Leaders are also expected to faithfully carry out the practical responsibilities necessary for the ministry to function well.

These include:

  • Attend the weekly Leaders Meeting (typically Thursday evenings).
  • Submit breakfast headcount by Thursday evening.
  • Record weekly attendance after each session.
  • Communicate important updates to the ministry leadership.
  • Support ministry events and initiatives whenever possible.

Faithfulness in small responsibilities enables greater ministry effectiveness.

What Success Looks Like

A successful leader is not simply someone with a large group.

Success looks like men who are:

  • Growing in their relationship with Christ.
  • Reading and applying God's Word.
  • Developing authentic Christian friendships.
  • Serving others.
  • Sharing their faith.
  • Discipling others.
  • Becoming future leaders.

Length of Commitment

One ministry cycle (approximately 14 weeks).

Leaders are encouraged to prayerfully consider continuing to serve beyond one cycle as God leads.

Our Prayer

Our prayer is that every Men's Fellowship Leader would faithfully follow Jesus, lovingly shepherd the men entrusted to him, and intentionally make disciples who will one day make disciples themselves.
